Three rounds of sound from the fox, interspersed with calls of a Pseudacris treefrog
The sound confused me when I first heard it in the afternoon. I went to the edge of our deck and looked down, and saw a gray fox bounding away. So when the sound came again in the wee hours of the morning (with some additional high-pitched noises at the beginning of the call), I knew what it was. So cool to hear this creature!
Nectaring on Dichelostemma capitatum (blue dicks) in the southern San Bernardino Mountains
A bee (see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/45163316) tried to buzz it off these flowers, but after shaking its wings, the butterfly held its ground.
Bit of a surprise. DOR. 48° when found. 7000 ft. elevation. Definitely wasn’t there four hours earlier.

This was a strange sight--a woodpecker feeding on a mullein inflorescence in a weedy field overrun by mullein. Who knew a woodpecker could make a living in these conditions?
