Came upon this fight between a gopher snake and a California King Snake at the Santa Ysabel Nature Center. The King snake had the gopher snake in a squeeze and finally got the head of the gopher snake in its mouth. It must have felt confident enough to let the constriction off and as soon as it did the gopher snake constricted on the King snake. The King snake released the gopher snakes head and the gopher snake took off and escaped. The King snake was the larger of the two.

A sun spider or other life form borne outside human imagination busy excavating and depositing soil out of its hole. It was typically too fast to see what it was without freezing the image with photography. Most of the time its head was covered in dirt, so it appeared to be scooping out soil with its forelegs and face. It's striped black and orange and has long, feathery cilia on disproportionately large back legs, giving it the appearance of some kind of avenging dreamcatcher. It was probably about 5cm from chelicerae to the end of its abdomen. If you're wondering what dreams are made of, it probably has to do with this creature.

A friend of mine had set his backpack down on the beach while he went swimming in the ocean. Those of us still on the beach saw a huge baboon walking towards us. We all took a few steps back, but the monkey went straight for the backpack and started rustling through its contents. One of my professors through his flip-flops at it, but the baboon did not leave. Eventually, it dragged the pack up to the top of the sand dune. None of us were sure what to do to recover the bag. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an ostrich came running straight at the baboon (http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1198222). The baboon took off running down the beach, and the ostrich simply turned around and walked away.

FYI: we did come back the same direction 30 minutes later and saw the same snake (full belly) on a patch of asphalt about 10 yards from where we first saw it, as if giving itself belly heat (air temps were still around 80 degrees). Due to some comments received about regurge, I also went back in the daylight the next day, and checked the area and did not find a regurged rattler. I believe the king kept it down.
