This caterpillar was within a silked together tent of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaves. I have recently seen Satyr angelwing, California tortoiseshell, and red admiral butterflies near this nettle patch. Information on caterpillars is scarce but my best guess is that this is a red admiral caterpillar? So, like maybe a red lieutenant at this point.
Update: I collected and have been rearing the caterpillar. Several days ago it became a chrysalis. It looks like it is a red admiral.
Additional update: an adult red admiral butterfly (photo added) eclosed from the chrysalis.
