Characterized by Aldritch and Friedmann (1943) by the smoky grey nape, back, tail, and tail coverts, with extensive feathering along the tarsi (as seen in this individual). Resident throughout northeastern BC, south along the eastern Rockies to northwestern Wyoming, and east along the aspen parkland and spruce-fir forest into Quebec.
