Description
This is in addition to the observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/34999972 which I have added several photos.
This encounter happened on the Surf Coast Cultural Walk, a group I co-lead with Wathawurrong woman, Corrina Eccles. As we climbed up the Ironbark Basin at Pt. Addis, the alarm calls from these parents were piercing. I wondered what the rope was in the tree until I realised the situation. I approached for a better look and after a few tense seconds looking at eachother the snake returned to its task, having sniffed out this nest of Buff-rumped Thornbills. I initially thought they were Yellow-rumped, however on FB Peter Menkhorst himself suggested Buff-rumped given the nesting habit.
Needless to say it was an incredible encounter and the group were thrilled to witness it, especially given the nature of the walk where we were paying close attention to the environment and it was the bird calls that alerted us.
Slightly frustratingly I did not have my DSLR with me (after being attached to it for the whole 2 week Flinders Ranges wildlife extraviganza immediately preceeding this walk) however the phone came through as good enough this time.
