Description

Blacklighting on the open trail in the Deering Estate North Addition Preserve. My setup was facing some remnant saltmarsh habitat so I was excited to see what would turn up. I had two cheapy DJ blacklights powered by USB battery packs (the kind used to charge phones). To learn more about the lights used in this setup, see here: https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/damontighe/11836-diy-moth-light

The moon rose around 11:45PM and there was little to no wind. Mosquitoes were bad but I was pretty well covered up and I was honestly expecting much worse (no-see-ums never showed up btw!).

Video of these lights in action in Big Cypress last year: https://youtu.be/tavmTa7WoPk

All observations from this area tonight: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2021-07-28&d2=2021-07-29&nelat=25.629236570821366&nelng=-80.29356218278006&order=asc&order_by=observed_on&place_id=any&swlat=25.62657639839481&swlng=-80.30377067029075&user_id=joemdo&verifiable=any

I set up another sheet along the Chinese Bridge Trail not too far away. Here are those observations: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2021-07-28&d2=2021-07-29&nelat=25.624604445091475&nelng=-80.30664234303616&order=asc&order_by=observed_on&place_id=any&project_id=blacklighting-florida&subview=map&swlat=25.623274314702098&swlng=-80.3117465867915&user_id=joemdo&verifiable=any

I also walked the Chinese Bridge Trail trail, looking for spiders and other nocturnal critters, just passing the time and waiting for stuff to come to the sheets: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2021-07-28&d2=2021-07-29&nelat=25.62369666463608&nelng=-80.29807600354913&order=asc&order_by=observed_on&place_id=any&subview=map&swlat=25.618376013789284&swlng=-80.31849297857049&user_id=joemdo&verifiable=any
