Was photographing lizards when this snake appeared and grabbed one. The snake held onto the lizard for a while, dragging it along, but finally released it. I can't imagine a snake this size could eat this lizard.

A California Vole (Microtus californicus), photographed as it was foraging for seeds at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, CA. This individual measured roughly 8 cm in lenght. I identified this animal as a California Vole base on its small ears (so small that they are almost hidden by its fur), its relatively small eyes, its grayish-brown fur that fades to gray around the belly, and its overall stocky build.

These tiny crickets live inside ant colonies, feeding on… ant excrement. Well, not poop, I don't think, but some other form ant secretion. Gross AND awesome. And small, about 5 mm long. I'm basing this ID on the range descriptions in this paper (entnemdept.ufl.edu/walker/buzz/s391lh20.pdf), which describes M. manni as not occurring west of the Cascades / Sierras / Tehachapis, except at San Diego. Not sure if they should be considered current or not.
