Experts - What is going on here? This male American Kestrel sure did seem to have the hots for this female Merlin. He kept trying to get close to her and even brought her a few treats (insects?) from the grass beneath the fence. She accepted the treats but didn't seem thrilled with the attention. I'm pretty sure this is Leptothorax, I'm not really sure what else it could be.
Two colonies were seen, I clumped them into one observation so it's easier to view, both were seen on fallen dead trees, both without bark, presumably a Pine species, one presumed nest entrance was seen (last photo), a worker went in, but no workers were ever seen coming out.
This species was shy and would freeze whenever I put my camera up to it.
L. crassipilis or L. canadensis, they are the only species with records in Arizona.
