Bursting out of the belly of a road-killed Red-shouldered Hawk. Probably yesterday's lunch, as today was quite cloudy. Further impressive as the ditches are full of snow and most of the water is frozen over

We heard this snake while we were on the road, in woods, twenty feet away. It was rattling continuously which we had never heard before at Sobrante Ridge. We do not know why it was warning with a rattle. It kept rattling with only short breaks for over 30 minutes. I walked home to get a camera with flash and 200 mm lens and located the snake by following the direction of the rattle sound. I had a 200 mm lens.

This young snake senses the air with it's tongue when I make large movements. It seems to never move it's tongue when I'm looking at it holding my camera and staying still.

Two snakes coiled together. The larger one was over 3 feet and very fat. Possibly gravid? The smaller one was 20 to 24 inches. Temperature about 70. Open grassland. Could this breeding behavior?

Frosty morning and there is actual frost on the snake. It was laying on a small game trail, I think used primarily by jackrabbits. The little guy didn't move the whole time I was hovering over it with a camera.

My lifer rosy boa. Was just starting to come out of a large crack when we accidentally scared it into the crack. Then waited 30-40 minutes for it to come back out. Was missing its left eye, which was clearly pecked at by something (photo 2).

First occurrence of species detection at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Fungal species presence upon Crotalus adamanteus determined by official investigation through USGS. Snake was observed along trail, and a photograph was sent to me. I noted the malform head, and determined the snake was potentially innoculated with SFD. Rehab was attempted by local wildlife facility, but snake expired two days later.

Although this looked like a beautifully choreographed mating dance, it is actually a form of ritual combat between two males, usually occurring in view of a female--she may have stayed behind the rock out of my sight. It had been going on for nearly 5 minutes when I left.

Rattlesnake just past the junction of Weir Canyon Trail and Deer Trail. Didn't see it until we walked within 10 feet. Didn't rattle at us. Stayed there for 3 minutes before moving West.
Red Diamond Rattlesnake I believe.
The two shots of it coiled are of it leaving, the rest are in chronological order from 9:19-9:24am.
Overcast weather. Snake blended in well.
