Description
Springtails were placed in a petri dish with 70% isopropyl alcohol to kill them. This appeared to work instantly but then the specimen started moving again after a few minutes so evidently was not ideal. Second attempt at focus stacked images didn't work as a result but first one came out surprisingly ok considering this was just from pointing my phone down the eyepiece.
First attempt at crush mounting was with three specimens on a slide but details were obscured by innards squeezed out.
Second attempt at crush mount was after attempting to stain the specimens with pholoxine and congo red, though this had little effect. They were then mounted in cotton blue which provided a little contrast but did not really seem necessary. More detail was retained when crushing probably just as a result of placing a dozen specimens on the slide.
