Carex disperma is most abundant in this area in wetlands located in open to closed understory of mature subalpine fir forests, here at the southwest edge of the Spanish Peaks, Madison Range, Madison County, Montana. Spikelets comprise 2-3 female flowers positioned below a few male flowers, the latter of which are often spent by middle summer. This distinctive sedge grows beneath other plants in boggy environments and thus is inconspicuous.
