brownthumb_'s Identifications

This fern was found growing in the shade of a large tree near Crescent Lake Park. The habitat could be considered forest/ urban. The fern leaf was large at approximately 2.5 feet long and had one long stem with several leaves along each stem. The leaves were all a bright green and elongated ending in a spear shape. On the underside of the leaves of some of the ferns, the sori were visible in pairs of circular disk-shaped nodules that were yellow/orange in color. The fern was growing up through several other species of plants at the base of the tree and appeared to be spread in the surrounding area as far as the tree canopy cover reached. The organism was not captive or cultivated.

With Valeri Ponzo. We walked the boardwalk to the observation platform at the end (with hundreds of unidentifiable sea ducks in the bay), then walked back. The weather at the start was cloudy and 64 degrees ("feels like" 63), with calm winds. We left at 1036 and headed to Orman House Historic State Park.
