What

Cucumber Cap (Macrocystidia cucumis)

Date

November 1, 2021 12:39 PM PDT

Description

I found this mushroom out of desperation. I was walking around wwu campus, attempting to find a mushroom that I COULD identify- not a LBM- when I stumbled along this guy. Even though he was little and brown, I decided to give identification a try. This mushroom was nestled among pine leaves off to the side of the brick path that cuts through western campus. It was a very particular looking mushroom: it had a dark brown matte cap, but the bottom of the cap (not underside) was light -toward the edges. It seemed to be mutated, as in not a standard sample. The stipe was warped and the gills did not connect to it. It had been dry the past week, and so not many mushrooms were out. The fact that this one was out leads me to believe it to be a fairly tolerant mushroom. The strangest thing about this mushroom is the smell: it had an almost chemical like smell, but very fresh. A natural chemical. After learning the name of this mushroom by looking through iNat, the smell made sense- it does smell if cucumber. A spore print revealed brown spores (or maybe it was just a full stain). In conclusion, this is most definitely a cucumber cap.
