This morning something whooshing past my right ear (3-4 metres away) got my attention and I instantly thought "omfg I'm going to get my first picture of Falco peregrines (Peregrine Falcon).
I chased after this raptor and was only able to get a photo of the feet and thought "yep, definitely getting my very first Peregrine photos today!"
Raptor took off past the Wurrumiyanga Pub and towards the footy oval and I lost track of it...
All of a sudden I see him in flight a few hundred metres away, give chase and got a couple shots of him in flight only to watch him swing back around to the footy oval to perch on one of the big floodlights around the oval...
Adrenaline kicks in and I race back towards the footy oval and was able to get some good shots of what I later identified as Accipiter fasciatus (Brown Goshawk)...
Bird watching makes you look like a loony idiot but is definitely very rewarding even though you didn't get your prized Peregrine Falcon photos 🤠
The general Tiwi name for hawks, kites and falcons is Murtati.
Will be interviewing our elders for more specific names soon.
