Spotted flying low in the dunes. Rested briefly. Strong northwesterly at the time of observation. Northeasterly and northerly wind the previous day. Butterfly eventually flew north-west over the beach in the direction of a headland.
Totally unsure of the breed, seems unuasual and not seen before
Blue and black butterfly, smaller than a monarch butterfly in my garden that has tropical flowers.

Pretty caterpillars out on a warm day.
Butterflies have been around since mid November.
Spotted the first 'on wing' of the season at Mahakirau on November 18th.
Six individuals counted in this vicinity. Often a pair seen in flight tango. Courtship or rivalry? They seem to have a fairly tight and repetitive flight pattern.
Spent c.3 hours solely on chasing Tussock Butterflies but they almost never landed.
