Flying around very clumsy at night next to a river in a rural part of the Rocky Mountain Trench. Something strange on one of its legs that we tried to capture in the 2nd photo.

Description

Found laying on top of the snow in a small area of lodgepole pine (surrounded by a larger area of ponderosa/ Douglas fir open forest) in the Rocky Mountain Trench. My best guess is that it is either an owl pellet, or an exceptionally large cocoon of some sort. It is very light in weight and doesn't feel like a dense material. At first I thought it was a ball of duct tape due to the very silvery colour. What is this thing?
