On the ID Front

This morning, I made twenty or so observations from two users casual because they were clearly wrong on date and place. Summer flowering plants in April in downtown Manhattan? That was one alarm, then I noticed that the more prolific of these users had put up an observation of a Brown Rat with a piece of pizza on a stairwell. (Two people research graded that one.) I thought it smelled, so I checked: this was a stolen-the-internet picture of local famous "Pizza Rat" of a few years ago. The same user also had a picture of a Virginia Opossum under subway seat. This picture was all also over the internet. (One person voted to RG that observation.) I flagged these for copyright.

Meanwhile, the user in has question has 100 plus observations, in Texas, Washington, etc., areas outside my knowledge, but I suspect that many of these are also bogus as to date/place, if not copyright violations. I'm not sure how to flag such problematic users -- it's not spam (though it really is) or offensive material (though it certainly is offensive to iNat's mission), so I've queried the Help desk for assistance.

Be vigilant. Too many identifiers race through observations without thinking of probability.

Update May 14: as suspected, user was using other copyrighted images, which have been flagged by the Help desk (using https://tineye.com to discover the originals).
