May Plant Count 2021

What I learned during this project:

  • many of my favourite wildflowers are not yet blooming (Western Wood Lily and Scarlet Paintbrush, for example)
  • I struggled to identify the many kinds of vetches that seem to thrive in Canmore, so will attempt to be more interested in them as they bloom so that I'll be more likely to be able to identify them for the 2022 May Plant Count
  • I found two new-to-me wildflowers along the Great Canadian Trail (TSMUP): sweet coltsfoot (TBC once the leaves appear) and Elephant Head (which I've most-often seen on the Helen Lake Trail), which I'll be watching to see if/when it flowers later this year
  • the most showy flowers I spotted were another favourite: Calypso bulbosa var. americana (yes, I learned the Eastern variant grows in Canmore)
  • there are a lot of Mountain Deathcamas plants around, and also many kinds of wintergreen (which have yet to flower)
