Egrets of Mountain View
A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to enjoy a sabbatical from my job as a librarian and I had sixteen weeks, a semester, to work on a research project. I decided to commit to just one volunteer project during that time so that I could stay focused on my project while still having an outlet for community. Fortunately, my connection to the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Association lead me to volunteering once a week for Egret Office Hours on the Google campus in Mountain View. It was so interesting to hear what people had to say about the Great and Snowy Egrets that roost annually in a stand of Sycamore trees near the Bay. This intersected nicely with an online class I signed up for called Civic Ecology that was offered through Cornell.
