(Mostly) Insects

I went for a walk in Coldspring Park in Newton, MA where I turned over downed logs to search for insects. It was just under 50 degrees and the sun was beginning to set. At first I saw millipedes, small beetles, and extremely small spiders. Unfortunately the camera on my phone couldn't register the beetles and miniature spiders. When I moved to the next log I saw a moth resting on the side of the log as well as another millipede or maybe a type of centipede. I saw a spider web on the last log I inspected and searched for the spider. After a while I saw some legs poking out of the decomposing wood and shined my flashlight into the crevice and saw the back of the spider. This leads me to believe it was a burrowing spider or a type of spider that moves to more compact areas during the cold. Seeing these insects and arachnid made me begin to think about where they were getting their food. My hypothesis was that they are either primary consumers or decomposers. (I also included a moth a saw the previous night).

Plants

I went for a walk in residential Newton where most of the species I observed are what I assume to be domestic. It was around 9 pm and 45 degrees. I saw mosses, vascular plants and non vascular plants.

fungi

in my walk in coldspring park i saw many different fungi. cold spring park is in newton ma. i also saw a toad. I relate this to the material we are learning in class because the fungi seem similar in appearance but are different species (i think) so if they are different this could show how some fungi evolved to thrive in the same enviornment,
