I am a retired biology professor (Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, Canada). My formal background is in marine biology with a focus on microbial processes in seagrass beds and saltmarshes as well as descriptive stuff. In my research at Dalhousie University I developed an interest in organic farms, especially in "weeds", their role in nutrient cycling, pest control, food for wildlife etc. Towards retirement (2008) I began to hike a lot locally and to study the natural history of the "hinterland" (forests, bogs, barrens etc); 'still at it. Over the period 2015-2019, I repeated a set descriptive studies on seagrass beds at Barbados and Carriacou that I had conducted in 1969. I am active in several natural history, environmental and trail groups in the Halifax area. Web stuff at www.versicolor.ca. While I registered with iNaturalist in 2012, I started to be active on it only on Sep 5, 2018. 'Still getting the hang of it. My pen name (JackPine22) derives from my love of the Jack Pine-Broom Crowberry Barrens found on scattered outcrops along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia.
