I grew up in Idaho. My mother sewed a butterfly net for me when I was 4, and I spent a good portion of my childhood collecting "bugs" and categorizing them. I was in 4-H where I raised rabbits and guinea pigs. Fast forward 40+ years: I am a pathologist, so I use the microscope to look at tissue slides and categorize/diagnose patient samples. For fun, I spend time outside with my family hiking and fishing and checking things out. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic of 2020, I reviewed my old files to find cases of infectious diseases both traditional like fungal and viral infections and non-traditional like HPV-driven malignancies. I also have looked at pond water and water from from my office fish tank.
