SUMMARY: Mostly cloudy (cloudy transitioning to sunny) skies, with flocks of gold finches on the slopes; fall not far away.

WEATHER COMMENT: Heavy overcast at start, possibly low ceiling or fog. As I was alking to car, the sun broke out - sunny rest of day. No rain; vegetation wet maybe from mist., warm temp.

ROUTE TAKEN: Parked in north lot. Went up cutoff to Summit Rd., then Summit Rd to Summit. Down via main ski slope.

TERRAIN: Sloping terrain on highest hill in Boston metro area.

PHENOLOGY: The vegetation is saying fall is not far away. The temp. and humidity say otherwise. Some color visible in plants, especially ground cover. I saw brown birds and a goldfinch on ski slope. They may be readying to go south. Golden rods. BHO had deer mous

Local news talking about the number of dead and dying trees - blamed on the drought and gypsy moth damage.
Hurrcane Florence slammed in to the Carolinas, bringing lots fo rain.

Description

I'm not sure what ant these are. There were dozens of winged ants swarming on the top fo the Blue Hill Observatory. If I were a high point, they would swarm around me and start to cover me, or my camera case. It was a frenzy - brutality in nature. It seemed that the cloud came in waves - some time it was thick, sometimes it thinned.

These are fairly small ants - more like the little black ants than sugar ants.

This one was caught and held temporarily captive in a waste basket. It will be released somewhere far into the woods. Such big eyes!
