Last day to make your observations!

Finally no rain! We've had our worst weather of any CNC so far, but I finally see the sun after 3 days! We're far behind our goals and our previous years' totals. Can we make one final last-day push and get those numbers up and overtake Boston and NYC?

We still have so many species to find. Almost every species of butterfly, in fact. Any Paper Wasp or Yellowjacket too. Lots of jumping spiders are still on our needs list. And surprisingly even some easy-to-find plants.

Here's a sample of our current top needs list, but you can visit http://targets.cncphilly.org/ to see an auto-refreshing full list.

Let's go Philly!

Unfortunately, the day of good weather is on a business day... /:

I shot over a dozen species of bee today, plus wasps, flies, and assorted other insects and spiders. Hope they can all get posted and IDed in time! Also have at least one warbler that hasn’t been photographed this year, or at least hasn’t been posted yet. -Celeste

I've just posted golden club, and got at least 6 more of the plants pictured above. Vast majority of my photos still to be posted. Hope we get there...

So this morning I observed a "new species" for me and for Philly thanks to @navin_sasikumar 's "targets" tool. I was looking at things seen in NYC but not in Philly. Most of them are things you would expect--no sea lettuce, horseshoe crabs, or mussels in our area. But down the list a bit was "Pestalotiopsis Tip Blight." Which I had never heard of but which seems basically to be any time juniper, cypress, etc. die off at the tips. Fuller info here:

https://u.osu.edu/ornamentaldiseasefacts/nursery/pestalotiopsis-tip-blight-and-dieback-of-conifers/941-2/#:~:text=Pestalotiopsis%20is%20a%20very%20common,associated%20with%20previously%20stressed%20plants.

I'm sure we have just as much of this in Philly as there is in NYC, just they have social transmission of seeing it. I definitely found examples in old cypress pics. Wonder what else is to be discovered in that tool?

@mbwildlife That was a bummer for sure, but the weather wasn't that great even yesterday, at least where I was. It was cold and windy. We'll do better next year.

Thanks, @bugsandbirds! That's excellent news. I really dipped on insects this year.

@srall Yay! Thanks so much as always for all the effort you put into this. You really keep me going year after year.

@mattparr Oooh! That is wonderful! I'm really excited to see what you or anyone else discovers using that tool.
