A Maggoty Affair

Another day of melting, the light dreary, the temperature warm. In the afternoon, I took a short walk to the woods at Lashbrook Park. As I approached the woods, I could hear a male Cardinal singing somewhere high in the tree tops, celebrating the spring-like weather.

I peeked beneath the loose bark on several downed trees, hoping to find a bright red bark beetle. Instead, I uncovered a variety of fly larvae and pupae, a real maggoty affair. The biggest larvae (20mm and 30mm) were Crane Flies. The others, some as small as 2mm, I have no idea what they might be. Several have been kept for rearing, so with any luck they might be identified when they emerge as adults.
