International Monarch Monitoring Blitz

Get ready to make a difference for monarchs!
From July 26 to August 4, 2024, the 8th International Monarch Monitoring Blitz invites thousands of participants from Canada, Mexico, and the United States in a unified effort to support monarch butterfly conservation. This annual event is a great opportunity for nature enthusiasts, families, and citizen scientists to contribute to the preservation of a migratory species.
During this blitz, volunteers are encouraged to explore their local areas, looking for monarch butterflies and their habitats. By recording sightings of monarchs, milkweed plants, and signs of reproduction such as eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalids, you can provide valuable data to researchers. This collective effort helps scientists understand more about monarch populations and their needs, ultimately guiding conservation actions to protect monarchs.
This year, we're excited to share that the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), which leads iNaturalist.ca as part of the worldwide iNaturalist data-sharing network, has joined the international partners in organizing and promoting the Monarch Blitz throughout North America. This partnership strengthens trinational efforts and amplifies the impact of data collected through community science initiatives.

Why Participate?
By participating in the Monarch Monitoring Blitz, you become part of a larger movement to protect an endangered species that is both ecologically significant and culturally symbolic. Monarch butterflies are renowned for their incredible migratory journey, spanning thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to Mexico. However, their populations are declining due to habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. Your observations can make a difference by providing essential data that informs conservation strategies and helps safeguard the future of these butterflies.
How to Get Involved
From July 26 to August 4, upload your monarch or milkweed observations using the iNaturalist app or at iNaturalist.ca and they’ll automatically be added to our iNaturalist Monarch Monitoring Blitz project. No need to add them to the project yourself as long as they’re uploaded to iNaturalist, but you can head there to check out your observations and others that are being added. Remember this includes all 13 species of milkweed found in Canada, and all life stages of Monarch.
For added value, once you’ve uploaded a Monarch observation, you can go back to it in the app or online and add a “life stage” using annotations to call it an adult, egg, larva or pupa (i.e. chrysalis/cocoon). This gives important extra information for researchers to make better use of your data.

Take It a Step Further
For those living in Ontario and looking for an extra challenge, consider joining the iNaturalist project, "Monarch Migration in Ontario / Migration du Monarque en Ontario." This project invites users to track monarch sightings and Roosts (i.e. where Monarchs spend the night) to provide valuable data on migration patterns and habitat use. By contributing to this project, you can help enhance our understanding of monarch migration and support conservation efforts.

Blitz international de suivi du monarque

Préparez-vous à faire une différence pour les monarques! Du 26 juillet au 4 août 2024, le 8e Blitz international de suivi du monarque invite des milliers de participants du Canada, du Mexique et des États-Unis à unir leur force pour soutenir la conservation de ce papillon. Cet événement annuel est une excellente occasion pour les passionnés de nature, les familles et les scientifiques citoyens de contribuer à la préservation d’une espèce migratoire.
Durant ce blitz, nous encourageons les bénévoles à explorer leurs environs à la recherche de monarques et de leurs habitats. En consignant des observations de monarques, d’asclépiades et de signes de reproduction comme des œufs, des chenilles et des chrysalides, vous pouvez fournir de précieuses données aux chercheurs. Cet effort collectif aide les scientifiques à en savoir plus au sujet des populations de monarques et de leurs besoins, guidant à terme les mesures de conservation pour protéger cette espèce.
Nous sommes enthousiastes d’annoncer que cette année, la Fédération canadienne de la faune (FCF), qui dirige iNaturalist.ca dans le cadre du réseau mondial de partage des données iNaturalist, s’est jointe aux partenaires internationaux pour organiser et promouvoir le Blitz de suivi du monarque à l’échelle de l’Amérique du Nord. Ce partenariat renforce les efforts déployés dans les trois pays et amplifie l’incidence des données recueillies dans le cadre d’initiatives de science communautaire.

Pourquoi participer?
En participant au Blitz international de suivi du monarque, vous prenez part à un mouvement plus vaste visant à protéger une espèce en voie de disparition à la fois écologiquement importante et culturellement symbolique. Les monarques sont reconnus pour leur parcours migratoire incroyable qui s’étend sur des milliers de kilomètres du Canada jusqu’au Mexique en passant par les États-Unis. Or, leurs populations connaissent un déclin en raison de la perte d’habitats, des changements climatiques et de l’utilisation de pesticides. Vos observations peuvent faire une différence en fournissant des données essentielles qui guideront les stratégies de conservation et contribueront à protéger l’avenir de ces papillons.
Comment s’impliquer?
Du 26 juillet au 4 août, téléversez vos observations de monarque ou d’asclépiade sur l’appli iNaturalist ou au iNaturalist.ca et elles seront automatiquement ajoutées au Blitz de suivi du monarque iNaturalist . Si vous téléversez vos observations sur iNaturalist, vous n’avez pas à les ajouter vous-même au projet, mais vous pouvez y jeter un coup d’œil pour voir vos contributions et celles des autres. N’oubliez pas que le projet porte sur les 13 espèces d’asclépiades présentes au Canada et sur toutes les étapes de la vie du monarque.
Pour ajouter de la valeur à vos observations de monarque, vous pouvez y revenir une fois qu’elles sont téléversées dans l’appli ou en ligne et mentionner l’étape du cycle de vie, soit adulte, œuf, larve ou pupe (c.-à-d. chrysalide ou cocon), en commentaire. Vous donnerez ainsi de l’information supplémentaire importante aux chercheurs, ce qui leur permettra de mieux utiliser vos données.

Envie d’en faire un peu plus?
Les résidents de l’Ontario qui cherchent à relever un défi supplémentaire peuvent se joindre au projet iNaturalist Monarch Migration in Ontario/Migration du monarque en Ontario. Ce projet invite les utilisateurs à contribuer au suivi des observations de monarques et de leurs lieux de repos (c.-à-d. les sites où ils passent la nuit) afin d’obtenir de précieuses données sur les schémas habituels de migration et l’utilisation de l’habitat chez cette espèce. En participant à ce projet, vous contribuez à améliorer notre compréhension de la migration du monarque et à soutenir les efforts de conservation.
