July Weeds of the Month - Knapweeds

Happy July, invasive species observers! The Columbia Gorge Cooperative Weed Management Area's weed of the month is actually a group of species, invasive Knapweeds. There are many in Oregon but frequently encountered ones include Spotted Knapweed, Diffuse Knapweed, and Meadow Knapweed.

Learn more about Knapweeds and view the CWMA's Knapweed flier, then add any observations to our Oregon iMapInvasives project!

If you have knapweed on your property, there are many online resources for how best to manage them, or you can check with your local cooperative weed management area, soil and water conservation district, or OSU Extension for tips on how to control or eradicate these plants. When disposing of pulled plants, be sure to bag flowering plants. Bagged plants should not be composted but placed in the garbage.

Cheers,
Lindsey

Policeman's Helmet info

Just a quick share from our friends to the north, King County's July weed of the month is Policeman's Helmet, Impatiens glandulifera, a species that we track and manage in Oregon as well. Check out some great photos of 10' tall plants and other great info on their site.
