Current Status of Tree Project - November 2023

Current status Nov 2023
16,513 observations of trees by 719 observers
(anyone can add this project to any observation, so please if you see a tree observation languishing without an ID, please add it here. This is advertized for southern Africa to keep the list manageable at just over 1000 species (but really the project is open to anywhere in Africa - although s Afr overwhelmingly dominates it - 96% of observations).

So far: 1,157 species have been identified by 532 identifiers (409 identifiers have ID'd to species level)

Data summary (year, observations, (species-ID), RG%)

Overall: 16,513 (9,593) 44%

  • pre2018: 996 (822) 41%
  • 2018: 164 (126) 99 60%
  • 2019: 515 (420) 60%
  • 2020: 774 (577) 68%
  • 2021: 3,551 (2,596) 65%
  • 2022: 7,223 (2,845) 30%
  • 2023: 3,305 (2,225) 43%

If you want to help with tree Identifications

  • Add this tree (ID) project to any tree observations that need an ID. (identifying them as monocots or dicots does not really help with trees).
  • Help make identifications here. Note that you can add the family or genus in the filters below to narrow down the odds, but most observations languish at the family unknown stage: most of the family level have been moved to genus or species ID level.
    • click to assist with Need ID to Family level or finer 5,076 observations Nov 2023
    • click to assist with Assigned to Family or Genus, but need ID to species level 1,688 observations Nov 2023
    • click to assist with Species level identifications that need checking and verification 2,005 observations Nov 2023

  • remind yourself on how the ID tool works (a 2 min tutorial): https://vimeo.com/246153496
  • remember to mark as reviewed all the observations that you cannot ID, so that they dont bother you again (you can access them again later by clicking on the "reviewed"button).

Thanks very much or your help!

?? Interested in trees:

Here are our identified Trees:
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/trees-of-southern-africa-list
.* at 232,709 observations, this means that our ID project amounts to about 7% of our tree observations for the region (and 4% are not identified yet).

If you prefer checklist view, then try this:
