@dbltucker i completely missed this in the field. We both looked at this and decided it was Bazzania but looking at the photos now you can see that it has an elliptical underleaf ergo pearsonii. under the hemlocks

On flat compact soil along seldom used trail mostly sunny amongst non-native grasses, coyote brush, coast live oak. Short cilia mostly at the apex of the lobes but some along the margin. Ventral surface is pale - if there are any scales they must be hyaline - I could not see them. Spores are about 80µm at widest, usually 9 areolae across with papillae at the junctions.
