October 2024 PNW/BC Liverworts not yet observed in iNat system

Comparing the official list of BC liverworts to those documented in the iNaturalist system in 2023, I came up with this list of 66 species that have yet to be captured on iNat. In the intervening year many of these have been crossed off the list and we are down to 35 species remaining

Many of these species are hypermaritime or wet coastal (Haida Gwaii, Central Coast, Western Vancouver Island, Prince Rupert), high alpine (2000+m) , far northern (top 1/2 of BC) or east facing in the rockies. I am annotating them in places where I have something to add.

If you are interested in targeting these taxa, I suggest doing the following things for recon:

(1) Check the names at The Bryophyte Nomenclator
(2) Check relevant name at Bryophyte Flora of North America Preliminary Liverwort Treatments, where you will find exhaustive description and sometimes even a lavish illustration.
(3) To target regions where it is known to occur, check The Bryophyte Portal Map Search
(4) Do a species search in the iNaturalist system to see if there are photos of the species from elsewhere in the world so that you might prime your search image.
